4 Players Who Might Retire from IPL After the 2025 Season: MS Dhoni, R Ashwin, and More

Several veteran players are struggling in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season. Considering their age, current form, and future potential, many of them may choose to retire once the season concludes.

Here are 4 players who might consider retiring from the IPL after the 2025 season:

1. Ravichandran Ashwin

Veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin was acquired by the Chennai Super Kings for a substantial ₹9.75 crore during the IPL 2025 Mega Auction, making him the team’s second-most expensive signing. However, he has struggled to live up to expectations this season. The 37-year-old has featured in seven matches so far, managing to take only five wickets. He has also been left out of the playing XI on multiple occasions. Given his age and current form, it appears unlikely that Ashwin will return for another IPL season.Ravichandran Ashwin, who is one of India’s greatest off-spinners, has picked 185 wickets and scored 812 runs in 219 matches of his IPL career so far.

2. Mahendra Singh Dhoni

Five-time IPL-winning captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni is once again at the center of retirement speculation. With Chennai Super Kings (CSK) underperforming in all departments and currently at the bottom of the IPL 2025 points table, questions around Dhoni’s future in the league have intensified.

At 43, Dhoni remains one of the sharpest wicketkeepers in the game, but ongoing knee issues have impacted his mobility. While he has contributed with a few crucial innings this season, CSK has needed more from him, especially with the top order struggling to post competitive totals.

Considering his age and physical challenges, it seems increasingly unlikely that Dhoni will continue beyond the 2025 IPL season.

3. Moeen Ali

English all-rounder Moeen Ali was picked up by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) for ₹2 crore in the IPL 2025 Mega Auction. However, he hasn’t played a significant role for the defending champions this season. The 38-year-old has featured in only four matches so far and hasn’t been a regular part of the playing XI. Considering his age and limited impact, the 2025 season could very well be Moeen Ali’s final appearance in the IPL.

4. Faf du Plessis

Faf du Plessis was signed by Delhi Capitals for ₹2 crore during the IPL 2025 Mega Auction and was named the team’s vice-captain ahead of the season. However, the 40-year-old has faced challenges with both fitness and form throughout the tournament.

So far, Du Plessis has played only four matches this season, managing just one half-century. He had previously hinted that his stint with Delhi Capitals would mark the final chapter of his IPL career. Given his current performance and age, the ongoing IPL 2025 season is likely to be his last.
