On Monday, February 17, 2025, Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar was appointed as the Chief Election Commissioner following a meeting of a three-member committee led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi. This appointment marks the first under the new law governing the selection of election commissioners.

Despite the Congress party’s request for the government to postpone the meeting until after February 19, 2025, when the Supreme Court is set to hear a challenge to the law, the appointment proceeded as scheduled. The decision to appoint Gyanesh Kumar as the Chief Election Commissioner demonstrates a commitment to upholding the integrity and transparency of the electoral process in our country.
