Virat Kohli makes history, surpasses former Indian captain’s record in IND vs PAK Champions Trophy showdown.

India will be facing their arch-rivals Pakistan in the second match of the 2025 Champions Trophy at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. Meanwhile, Virat Kohli has made history by breaking a record previously held by a former Indian captain during the clash against Pakistan.
Indian cricket legend Virat Kohli made history during the India vs Pakistan Champions Trophy 2025 match at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Sunday, February 23.
Kohli broke the record previously held by former India captain Mohammad Azharuddin for the most catches taken by a fielder in One Day International (ODI) cricket. He was previously tied with Azharuddin at 156 catches each, but Kohli surpassed the former Indian skipper by taking his 157th catch during the clash against Pakistan.
This achievement solidifies Kohli’s reputation as one of the greatest fielders in ODI cricket history, showcasing his exceptional skill and dedication to the game.
Virat Kohli achieved a remarkable milestone by taking the catch of Naseem Shah off Kuldeep Yadav in the 47th over of Pakistan’s batting innings. Naseem chipped one towards long-on as Kohli charged in from the fence to make a spectacular low catch.
Kohli now holds the record for the most catches as a fielder for India in ODIs with 158 catches and counting. Following him are Mohd Azharuddin with 156 catches, Sachin Tendulkar with 140 catches, Rahul Dravid with 124 catches, and Suresh Raina with 102 catches.
After taking his 157th catch, Kohli added another catch to his tally, dismissing Pakistan for 241. Khushdil Shah slogged a ball from Harshit Rana in the 50th over towards deep mid-wicket, where Kohli was positioned to make an easy catch.
Pakistan managed to put up a decent total in Dubai, with Saud Shakeel being the highest scorer with 62 runs from 76 balls. Mohammad Rizwan and Shakeel had a 104-run partnership for the third wicket after losing both openers in the powerplay.
Pakistan won the toss and chose to bat first, aiming to set a competitive target. Despite losing their last game, they remained focused on performing well in the ICC event. Rizwan announced one change in the lineup, with Fakhar being replaced by Imam.
On the other hand, India’s captain Rohit Sharma expressed confidence in his experienced batting unit to handle the slower pitch conditions. He emphasized the importance of a strong team performance with both bat and ball, especially after a challenging previous game. India maintained the same lineup as the previous match.
